Admissions
UMD Freshman Applicants
If you are applying to the University of Maryland and you want to major in mechatronics engineering, you can declare yourself a pre-mеchatronics major on your application!
If you get accepted, you can spend the first two years of your college experience in College Park fulfilling your prerequisites, before transferring to the Shady Grove campus. In order to be accepted to the pre-mechatronics major, you will be evaluated by the same criteria as all freshman applicants to the A. James Clark School of Engineering.
Non-Clark School UMD Students
If you are currently a student at UMD but not enrolled in the Clark School, you must apply to the Engineering LEP in order to be admitted to the pre-mechatronics major. In order to be accepted to the Clark School as a UMD student, you must complete MATH141 with at least a B-, PHYS161 with at least a B-, CHEM135 with at least a C-, and have a 3.0 GPA at the time of application.
Once admitted to the Clark School, you can declare pre-mechatronics as your major, and get access to the rest of your prerequisites. When applying to the mechatronics engineering program, you do not have to meet any grade requirements, besides passing the prerequisites and having at least a 2.0 GPA at the time of application.
Current Clark School Students
If you are enrolled in a different major within the Clark School of Engineering, we strongly encourage you to speak to your adviser, or reach out to us at mechatronics@umd.edu. Once we determine your eligibility, you can fill out the change of major form, which can be found at https://go.umd.edu/majorchange. When asked for New Major, please put “Mechatronics (Shady Grove)." Once we receive this request, we will be in touch shortly.
