ECE Alum Petru Andrei (Ph.D. ’04) Named Chair of FAMU-FSU ECE Department

October 21, 2026

ECE alumnus Petru Andrei has been named Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Florida A&M University–Florida State University (FAMU-FSU) College of Engineering. The college is a unique collaboration between the two universities and is the only shared college of engineering in the United States. Dr. Andrei joined the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering in 2004.

Dr. Andrei earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University in Romania before receiving his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2004, under the supervision of Distinguished University Professor Emeritus Isaak Mayergoyz.

His research focuses on modeling and simulation of nanoscale and power semiconductor devices, energy storage systems, magnetic materials, and computational electromagnetics. As Department Chair, Andrei aims to strengthen the department's research and educational programs, with particular emphasis on the emerging and strategically important areas of artificial intelligence, quantum engineering, microelectronics, power systems resilience, and clean energy.

Dr. Andrei is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a Life Member of the American Physical Society (APS). He previously served as Publications Chair of the IEEE Magnetics Society and has held various leadership and organizational roles in major international conferences, including the IEEE International Magnetics Conference (INTERMAG), the Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Conference (MMM), and the International Conference on Simulation of Semiconductor Processes and Devices (SISPAD).
